The 65-km drive from Cancún International Airport (CUN) to Playa del Carmen takes about 50–70 minutes depending on traffic and which terminal you fly into. There are exactly three legitimate ways to make it, and they trade off cost against convenience:
Private transfer ($60–95 USD for up to 4 passengers). Pre-booked online before your flight. A driver holding a sign with your name meets you at the terminal exit, takes you straight to your rental address, and handles luggage. This is what we recommend for families, late flights, or anyone with more than carry-ons. Reputable operators confirm by email and don't add surprise fees.
ADO bus ($16–20 USD per person, runs every 30–60 minutes from ~8am to ~11pm). ADO has its own terminal inside the airport — turn right after customs in Terminals 3 and 4. The bus drops you at Playa's central ADO terminal on Avenida Juárez between 5th and 10th. From there a taxi to your rental runs $3–8 USD within town. This is the cheapest legitimate option, comfortable AC + WiFi buses, but adds 20–40 minutes total plus a luggage handoff.
Official airport taxi ($80–120 USD). Yellow taxis at the official taxi desk inside the terminal. More expensive than private transfer, no online pre-payment, but works if your plans changed and you need a ride immediately. Do NOT take a "taxi" from someone approaching you outside the terminal — those are unofficial and often charge $150+ once you're committed.
What to skip: every desk past customs labeled "tourist information," "free shuttle," "discount tour," or "concierge." They are timeshare presentations disguised as transport help. Walk past them with confidence and head straight to the official ADO booth or the exit if you have a pre-booked transfer.
